Welcome Inn in 2013- Can we help you?

10 May 2013 - 10:06 AM

Welcome to the BBLW "Welcome Inn" -- Front Desk -- Newcomers' Information Center!

Are you new to Breathing Better Living Well? Or have you been around for a while, lurking and learning? Reading and lurking is fine -- we invite you to do that for as long and as much as you wish -- but those who join in the discussion find BBLW and the friendships here to be even more rewarding!

Ready to post? The Welcome Inn is the perfect place to start. What you’re seeing here is a “read-only” forum, helping you figure out how to go about it. If you’re a member of the BBLW community (you can register at the top of the main forum page) you can post on any of the forums. But a great place to start is right here, in the forum just below this one, the Welcome Inn. Maybe you want to tell us who you are – your first name, diagnosis, etc. Maybe you don't care to tell us much about you, but want to ask a question. Whatever the case, we warmly welcome you to the BBLW Welcome Inn!

Posting on our forum is easy.

Renew and Rediscover?

15 February 2013 - 10:24 AM

Hi all.....

It's another milky white and grey February day here in Holland, Michigan. Last week I heard the meterologist say that in January we had .3% of available sunshine. In other words, in the daylight hours in the month of January, 2013, the sun was out - not 3% but three tenths of one percent - of the time. That's a whole lot of cloud time.

So what to do when those winter drearies hit? And even for those of you living in a sunny climate, how can you stay cheerful and hopeful with COPD?

Today I'm sharing with you part of a piece originally written by Jo-Von Tucker titled, "Renewal and Rediscovery with COPD." I edited it and added "You're Still You."

Take a look. I hope it gives you something to think about and brightens your day. Sometimes we just have to make our own sun. B)

You're Still You - Renewal and Rediscovery with COPD

We might say that as people with COPD [or another chronic lung disease] we have been given a bad sentence, dealt a difficult hand to play. Yet, we have more reason than just about anyone to see emotional growth and acceptance...

Throughout the coping process that comes with any chronic disease, we confront terror, loss, rage...all kinds of emotional pain. But when we are able to face both loss and fear of the unknown, we’re on our way to achieving some level of renewal. In finding this strength and facing the dreads of disease we learn that having this disease is not so overwhelming after all.

Renewal is like finding ourselves again. It is the same self but in new circumstances – yes, with constraints to handle, but with the tools to continue on regardless of changes and loss of ability to do things we once loved.

Renewal is not passive. It is a changing attitude towards our relationship with COPD, born of all our past struggles. Each day brings new challenges, and through this, we learn to set and reset our priorities in such a way that the limitations of our disease no longer define us.

With renewal comes discovery... knowing that we are the same people we always were. Simply, I’m the same me – but a me with COPD. Instead of focusing on what our disease makes us, it can become more a matter of "Who do we choose to be, given our limitations?" Yes, we have a choice! It is entirely possible to be physically disabled, or we may call it “limited,” without being emotionally handicapped...

I won't be here next Friday. I'm running away with my husband to a warm, sunny place for some much-needed time away, and together.

Breathe Well today, my friends. I'll be around most of the day if you have any questions.

Jane. :)
