I just talked today with my VA pulmonary specialist regarding the Heliox (helium/oxygen)70/30 mix. He said he has used it on a few patients in extreme distress for short periods of time under hospital conditions, and that in every instance there was a very satisfactory improvement in sob and O2 saturation, plus nearly instantaneous relief from panic symptoms.
He remarked also that despite the reduction in net O2 content from nearly 90% to only 30% (pure supplemental oxygen versus the Helium/oxygen mixture) The helium's lighter than air molecules carried the O2 portion of the mix completely into every area of the lungs, and this is why it is so very effective. When asked did he think that the recent study successes were a harbinger of greater availability and more widespread use for exercise-induced desaturation symptoms; His inequitable answer was; YES, most definitely... and likely sooner than later. When I asked about possible side effects, he said that none were known, nor seemed likely. And by the way, He said that it doesn't alter the voice either... So no chip-monk-type 'squeakies' either!
The second one is not about exercise but about the use to reduce CO2
