Debates exist in many aspects of medical care and treatment. And that's good. As new medicines are developed, methods change. What seems to have made sense in the past, is discovered to be useless when studied.

Something we have to be careful with, is that when it comes to the lungs, there are many types of problems that come into play. Pneumonia may be inflammation of the alveoli, which is not helped by albuterol neb treatments, but many times along with that comes spasm and excess mucous in the bronchial tubes (bronchitis) and if an albuterol neb can relieve that, it's a good idea to give it. Why would you not provide an easy and non-invasive treatment that may help your patient breathe easier?

With CHF (Congestive Heart Failure) on the other hand, there may be excess fluid in the lungs, but it should not be treated with a neb treatment. Treating the underlying mechanism of the disorder is best.

Jane.
