Hi Dr I just had a question on symptoms of anxiety or panic attacks, I was just diagnosed with COPD after having spit up a small amount of Blood in the sputum in Dec, I have had several checkups and just completed a Bronchoscopy and it was found to be Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema that caused the blood. No cancer was found. I find myself at times thinking or worrying about a repeat of the problem which I was told may occur from irritation and that it was nothing to get upset about. I do However and at times I feel like my mouth dries out and that I hyperventilate to a small degree and also when I use the inhalers I was given. Is the dry mouth and slight BP elevation etc part of the panic or anxiety. Just curious I was given Xanax prn but I hate taking any medications. Thanks for your advise. Bill :P

Hi Billy

I am so glad that you asked me this question! When we are diagnosed the first time, it is a shock. We go through extraordianry stress for a long time trying to sort it out in our mind what it all means for the rest of our life. I have been advocating a brief psychosocial support for a few visits for every newly diagnosed patient so they can digest the news and figure out all the new stuff that is coming on to them.

let me now answer your specific question:

Note that anxiety is stress

Dry mouth is a symptom of anxiety and stress

Blood pressure can rise with stress. actually, the connection between stress and blood pressure is widely studied.

In a panic attack, blood pressure can rise dramatically.

Hyperventilation can also result from stress and anxiety.

Billy, make sure that you take advantage of any patient education and pulmonary rehabilitation that is available.

Also, make full use of this wonderful resource "Breathing Better Living Well" and any other support groups you can find.

The more you will know about the condition and connect with the people who have the condition, more confident and less anxious you will feel
