Our dear friend Steve is in the hospital. He's had an off and on temp over several days and has been hospitalized with an infection. He also had some kind of reaction and is very, very sick.
Steve and his family are in my thoughts and prayers during this terrible time. I cannot imagine a worse time than Christmas to be going through this. I pray that Steve will rally yet again, and be back with us.

According to Patty, Steve's sister, Steve is resting comfortably as of late this afternoon. Jane let me know that Patty told her that he had an adverse reaction to a med he was given - ativan. He is off the vent today and seems to be recognizing family.
This is better news than earlier and I'm praying there continues to be progress.

Here's a two-part Tuesday report on Steve and I wanted to share it with you...and if you read it, you'll know why.
Morning: One of his nurses, Stephanie, reported to Patty that yesterday morning there was a scary episode when Steve was turned, then turned back over -- he became blue, his O2 sats were in the 50's, and his heart rate shot up into the 170's. He was less responsive. Not good at all.

From Patty later on in the day:
"When I was there yesterday (Monday), Steve was really out of it yet.....and I left thinking and wondering how long, if at all, he was going to come out of it. I had told him that I loved him before I left.
Today (Tuesday) I brought Steve a silly Christmas Duck that quacked a carol when it's beak was pressed...thinking I would just put it on a shelf for him to see. Picture this: I walk up to his bedside and said "hey there". He opened his eyes, rolled them, and said "Go Away!" We both burst out laughing! SO - I made him listen to that silly duck quack a carol! We even had Mom laughing! (which was a good thing!)
Now, I do realize that things are still quite serious, and he's by no means out of the woods, but just knowing that he was well enough, and with it enough, to enjoy doing that to me - was just pretty special! And, I also realize that tomorrow could bring something entirely different, but for now, he made my day! It's those little things that make these hard times more bearable! And for those of you who know his humor, I know that you'll appreciate the story! He is still off the ventilator, breathing on his own. It's just there for support, if needed. He is able now to drink and to try to eat. They brought him a tray today at lunch, but my guess is that he'll want Dad to bring up something better than hospital food.

Thank you, Kitty. All the prayers help, and we appreciate each and every one of them. Here's a note from Patty from yesterday, Christmas Day. I edited it so you get the basics. When Patty says that Steve's white blood count is down, that's good. That means that the antibiotics are working and Steve's system is not having to work so hard to kill the nasty bugs.
I'm just catching up on some things today and tomorrow we'll be going to Chicago to have Christmas with my mom, my sister and her family. Take care, everybody!

Haven't been into BBLW for a few days and was shocked to read that Steve has been in such trouble. I'm praying for him and hoping for a speedy recovery. He is such a joy. Will continue my prayers until he is safe and out of the woods back at home.
Hope everyone else is faring well and making it through the holidays well. The weather has been playing havoc with all of us, I'm sure. We went from 3 ft. of snow at our front rail (on top of the holly bushes)and less than 20 degrees to 2 days later no snow and lots of rain and 54 degrees. The sudden changes surely affect my breathing, but I still welcome the break from the ice and snow pileups. A few people that I know of are struggling for their lives due to icy road accidents that were out of anyone's control and it's a very sad thing. It's been a real challenge.
Keep the updates on Steve's condition coming thru. We're all pulling for him.

I have a brief update on Steve, but first --- Peg, I'm so sorry to hear that friends of yours are so badly injured. The icy roads are such a terrible hazard. Have you heard anything more? Please keep us updated and know that our thoughts and prayers are them --- and with you in your concern. I'm glad you told us about this. We're here to help each other and you're always a big support to us!
Here's what I heard from Patty on Christmas Day....
"Steve was a little sleepy when I got there, and I was concerned...but later found out the he had asked for Valium to help him rest a little. Once I knew that, I was less worried. He did wake up enough to watch me open a few of his Christmas gifts that I brought up to him. One in particular caught his eye...a 1958 edition of Sports Illustrated...he was born in 1959, but he said it was ok, I got close enough!
His WBC is down to 16.6. The culture from the bronchoscopy came back showing he does have a staph infection in his left lung. That's obviously not a good thing. He continues on at least 2 IV antibiotics. He's able to try to have a little food today... He will get Ensure today and also he asked for pretzels."

Hi all. Here's the latest update from Patty --- from Monday. Sounds like Steve's hanging in there and giving people around him a bit of hard time, which I'm sure is welcome. If any of you are from the South side of Chicago and have ever had Sanfratello's pizza, you know that it is possibly one of the best pizzas anywhere. The business started out in a little old house (and I mean old). They made the pizza in the kitchen and served it in the living room where there were maybe four small tables, and there was one small table in the dining room. It was dark and the floors creaked, but as I said, the pizza was amazing. We used to go there as teenagers. It is in Glenwood, IL. The place has grown.
"Today's report: Steve didn't end up needing the bronchoscopy this weekend....doc said it sounds like the mucus plug may be breaking up on its own. I saw Steve today and his color looked good, and was pretty alert. He asked if Dad could bring him a Sanfratello's pizza for dinner! His WBC is still high, and he continues on 2 IV antibiotics. He made Mom take down the"I've been good" Christmas stocking that I hung in his room! Bah - hum bug is one of his favorite sayings!
Wish I had a little better news to report....it's a long and tiring waiting game for everyone.....he's been in there for 10 days tomorrow."
