Dear Dr. Sharma,

First of all, on behalf of the BBLW team and all our members, I'd like to thank you for joining us here as our guest expert for the last few days. We are honored by your generous gift of time and expertise. You possess a wealth of information, backed by experience and we appreciate you sharing it with us.

I understand what Dee is saying about the winter months. This past winter, especially, was very difficult for those of us in the Northern USA. Here on the coast of West Michigan where the clouds come across the lake and park along the shore and dump snow for days at a time, sunshine time in the month of January, all 31 days of it, is often measured in minutes and hours, not days.

A couple things that work for me, even if they sound silly, are:
Going to a flower shop where it is warm and there are bright, live plants that are thriving.
Visiting a botanical garden, if possible. (many of them have wheelchairs available)
Buying fresh cut flowers to brighten my kitchen table or desk.
Finding a bright summery fabric at the fabric store to put on the kitchen table or desk.
When all else fails, even walking around a store such as Pier One Imports or World Market --- the bright colors, tropical music and art work from far off lands can really give me a lift when all I can see out my windows is grey ground, trees, and sky.

Now, for a question. We haven't talked much about exercise during our Q & A. Dr. Sharma, can you tell us a bit about how exercise physiologically and psychologically helps us be healthier and feel better?

Thank you again, Dr. Sharma! We've enjoyed having you as our guest here on BBLW and I hope you'll come back again sometime in the future!

Jane.

Hi Jane

These were three wonderful days of great Q and A session! Thanks to everyone for coming up with good questions! We had some bold and brave questions!

Thank you for providing me this wonderful opportunity!

Yes, I will love to come back and we will do a similar act.

Now for the question of exercise;

Exercise of moderate intensity is good for everyone for elevation of mood and spirits, mental alertness, cognitive functioning and sense of well-being.

The positive effects of exercise may be, to name a few, due to increased oxygenation, blood circulation, endorphin release, etc.

There are many studies that show positive effects of exercise so use this resource outside or in the comforts of your own home.

For mild to moderate depression, exercise is as good as an antidepressant. For winter season, exercise is a very good choice, it can lift the spirits, burn excess calories and clear the brain fog and cobwebs.

Anxiety is also lessened by exercising

People with COPD have an added benefit besides physical and mental fitness and that is that exercise over time can alleviate breathing discomfort and shortness of breath, improve the ability for daily activities and help clear mucus congestion and sinus flow to name just a few of the positive effects
